Guy Rupert Berryman, born 12 April 1978, is an English musician who is best known as the bassist of the British rock band, Coldplay. Berryman started playing the guitar at the age of eleven, but by the time he was thirteen, he had switched to the bass guitar. He studied at University College London, where he met future bandmates Chris Martin, Will Champion, and Jonny Buckland. The four of them formed Coldplay in 1996 and the band has since gone on to become one of the biggest rock acts of the 21st century.
Berryman’s bass playing style has been compared to the likes of John Entwistle of The Who and Paul McCartney of The Beatles. He is known for his melodic and rhythmic lines, which often serve as a solid foundation for the band’s songs. His playing has been described as “deceptively simple”, as he often manages to blend the right amount of complexity and accessibility into Coldplay’s music. Berryman’s bass parts are often the focus of the music and can even drive the melodies, particularly in live performances.
In addition to his bass playing, Berryman is also a talented songwriter. He has written many of the band’s songs, including the hit singles, “Viva La Vida”, “Clocks”, and “Magic”. He has also been credited with co-writing several other Coldplay songs, including “The Scientist”, “Fix You”, and “Paradise”.
Unlike many of his Coldplay bandmates, Berryman has been relatively quiet about his personal life. He is married to Joanna Berryman and the couple have two children together. He is also an active philanthropist and has donated to charities such as War Child and the United Nations Refugee Agency. He also has a passion for sailing and has participated in several ocean-racing competitions.
